Job Description

Design Group Staffing seeks a PROJECT MANAGER  for our client’s Edmonton, AB office.

This is a contract position with a department of the Government of Alberta.

Contract term: 1 year with possible 1 year extension

June 2018 - June 2019

 The Role

The Project Manager will handle various assigned projects: 

  • Manage scope and parameters for projects to meet client and stakeholder requirements in accordance with applicable GoA and Ministry codes, standards and guidelines.
  • Define responsibilities for design and construction teams based on established delivery methods, prepares associated requests for proposals/tenders and participates in evaluating proposals.
  • Manage expenditures through all stages of project implementation to ensure maximum value within approved budgets and that approved project budgets are not exceeded.
  • Monitor contractual commitments and ensures contract changes are documented, controlled, and approved within established guidelines.
  • Collaborate with project team members to establish feasible milestone dates that incorporate critical events and operational requirements of clients and stakeholders.
  • Determine critical paths for projects and ensures consultants/contractors/design-builds provide deliverables as scheduled.
  • Work with consultants to ensure quality control of deliverables (for example, verification reports, design reports, contract documents) and completeness and compliance with GoA and Ministry standards and guidelines and code requirements including sustainability (e.g., Energy Code, LEED, Green Globes, etc.).
  • Monitor construction, turnover, and commissioning processes as appropriate to ensure quality of construction, compliance with specifications, and achievement of established milestones and overall schedules.
  • Determine risks with potential to affect project scope, cost and/or schedule and evaluates associated likelihood.
  • Develop responses to identified risks, including avoidance, mitigation and/or acceptance. 

Required Qualfications & Experience 

Candidates must meet one of the following combinations of education / certification and experience:

University graduation in business, Construction, Engineering, Architecture or a related discipline AND minimum of 4 years related work experience


Two-year diploma in business, Construction, Engineering, Architecture or a related discipline from a recognized post- secondary institution AND minimum of 6 years related work experience


  • Currently active PMP or PGMP Certification as issued by the Project Management Institute or equivalent (attach a copy of the certificate or provide the certificate number)
  • Experience in initiating, planning, executing, controlling and closing a minimum of three projects for a GoA Department or for an organization of comparable size and complexity
  • Experience identifying, analyzing and managing project risks on large, complex projects
  • Experience working on an individual basis and in a team environment
  • Experience working in a self–directed environment
  • Experience working in a complex service delivery environment
  • Experience successfully implementing projects in a matrix environment
  • Experience in negotiations and consensus building
