Senior Manager of External affairs

Location – Northern Ontario (Comprehensive Relocation Package is provided by the client)

Client – A Canadian mining company

Job Summary

Reporting to the Director of Environment and Community Relations, the Senior Manager, External Affairs will be responsible for overseeing the implementation of the clients Aboriginal and Community relations strategy and plans in the communities surrounding their project.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

  • In collaboration with the client’s management, develop and refine the Aboriginal and Community relations strategy for the permitting, project, operations and closure phases and lead the implementation of the strategy and supporting plans
  • Foster and maintain strong relationships with our Aboriginal partners and the local communities
  • Provide an on-going presence in the communities, and ensure that stakeholders are kept up to date on the project and various activities
  • Engage the client's stakeholders and partners, solicit on-going input and feedback, and collaborate on areas of interest on social, human resources, training, business, environmental and other matters
  • Establish, implement and oversee the client's Grievance Mechanism and consultation records, and other Aboriginal and community relations plan and commitments, and ensure the client is in compliance with all requirements
  • Lead the collaborative design and active participation in the LTRA Implementation Committee

SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES

  • Ability to listen and communicate in a clear, honest, authentic and respectful manner
  • A self starter, a relentless drive and perseverance to achieve the goals
  • Experience working and negotiating with Aboriginal community members and local communities
  • Knowledge of the mining industry particularly the technical aspects that comprise the Long-Term Relationship Agreement
  • Ability to build working relationships through respect & integrity, open communication, teamwork, negotiation, influence and relationship management
  • Ability to drive high performance by delegating authority, setting goals and measuring performance, continuous learning & coaching, recognizing and rewarding

EXPERIENCE, QUALIFICATIONS & EDUCATION

  • A degree of diploma from a recognized institution in a related field.
  • 13+ years related experience, with a minimum of 5 years in a leadership role with the First Nations/aboriginal communities
  • Experience in the mining industry would be an asset.
