Design Group Staffing Vancouver is recruiting for a Project Estimator.  Our client, an industry leading heavy industry design-build contractor in Vancouver is seeking an experienced Project Estimator to join their team. They are anticipating a high volume of projects this year and beyond, and as such will be looking for the right individual to join this established design-build contractor for a long-term opportunity.

The successful Project Engineer will be developing new and existing relationships with clients and  estimating on projects with a focus in the area of bulk material handling projects

Accountabilities:

Responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

  • Leading the estimating activities for primarily supply & installation construction projects in the industrial sector (typical value range: $100k – $5m)
  • Participating or lead complete project proposal packages in response to RFPs
  • Meeting with existing and potential clients and develop new project opportunities
  • Developing business relationships with suppliers and sub-contractors
  • Reading construction drawings, prepare quantity take-offs and issue RFQs to subcontractors
  • Evaluating and analyzing subcontractor quotes
  • Proposing creative value engineering solutions
  • Developing improved methods- to cost and price projects (estimating tools) along with a risk/cost model for fixed price projects
  • Collaborating with project managers to develop execution methodology/approach for new projects
  • Evaluating the technical design, schedule, cost coding and structure of projects and develop benchmarks for estimating similar project scopes
  • Identifying opportunities for improving material handling designs and standards
  • Managing, lead or sponsor projects when necessary and appropriate
  • Interfacing with field staff and identify capabilities and resources to support estimating costs

Skills:

  • A minimum 5+ years’ estimating and field experience ideally with a heavy industrial contractor, working on bulk material handling installation projects
  • Should be familiar with working on plant facilities, commodity ports and terminals, heavy equipment/machinery or maintenance of facility operating equipment
  • Bachelor of Engineering or Applied Science Degree in Structural or Mechanical Engineering and Estimating or a ticketed Tradesperson
  • Experience with estimating software; i.e. Hard Dollar is an asset
  • Well-developed communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to handle criticism and diffuse confrontational situations.
  • Excellent communication with all project stakeholders from suppliers and fabricators, engineers from other disciplines and consultancies to clients and owners
  • Exhibit strong leadership qualities
  • Demonstrated ability to manage a large amount of resources to meet technical cost & schedule requirements of a project

The individual chosen for this role will be highly creative, professional, hardworking, achievement focused, analytical and organized.  Strong attention to detail, planning and excellent communication and interpersonal skills are a must.  Driver’s license is required.  All candidates must be able to work in Canada.
