Location – East Coast of Canada - relocation required (NO FIFO option. Client offers relocation assistance).

Report to – General Manager

Direct Reports – Mine Captain, Mine General Foreman

Job Summary

To provide strategic, safe, efficient, cost effective and legally compliant supervision and management of the mine operations. The Mine Operations Superintendent will lead the team in the development and implementation of the company’s strategic plan to achieve both short and long-term goals.

The Mine Operations Superintendent is an integral part of the clients leadership team and is responsible for the development and production of the underground mine to achieve safety targets, production output, improve overall efficiency and ensure the mine operates within budget.  The Mine Operations Superintendent supervises all underground work performed, and any third-party contractor, to ensure the safe operation of the mine and to ensure production tonnage and quality; waste removal; budgets and cost controls are met.

As a senior employee, the incumbent is responsible for creating an environment where Health & Safety is an absolute priority. This shall be achieved by developing safe work practices, positively influencing work safety policies, and acting as leader in the promotion of Health & Safety. As a superintendent, the incumbent will demonstrate the company safety values; hold others accountable to report incidents, damages, workplace hazards, etc…; ensure equipment is safe for use and being used appropriately; and promote and be involved with the site safety standards and procedures including pre-shift meetings, toolbox talks and safety alerts, to improve safety culture on site.

The Mine Operations Superintendent is responsible for:

  • Uphold company and relevant regulations on safety and environment as well as establish best practices;
  • Managing the overall mine operations financials to ensure profitability and shareholder value;
  • Managing the overall manpower of the mine operations;
  • Developing cost effective methods to reduce costs and promote short and medium range plans.

Main tasks

  • Review data on operating costs, ore values, ventilation, ground control, reclamation and surveys to instruct employees and contractors in the execution of long and short-term mine plans
  • Oversee the mining manpower and contractor operations and ensure they abide by corporate and provincial safety standards and approved mine operation plans
  • Tour and inspect the mine to detect and resolve safety, health, environmental, development, production, equipment utilization and personnel problems in coordination with appropriate resource providers;
  • Work with employees and contractors to implement action plans to optimize mining process performance and attain efficiency targets in the areas of labour productivity, equipment availability and utilization and material consumption;
  • Work within predetermined work budgets and monitor daily, weekly and monthly costs;
  • Work closely with the mine leadership team and contractors and other departments to identify opportunities that will improve process and overall achievements of company objectives;
  • Manage the overall manpower of the mine team to maximize productivity, control overtime and manage vacation requests, ensuring completion of performance reviews, probationary reviews and disciplinary action forms;
  • Develop cost effective methods to targets to reduce costs wherever possible while maximizing profitability;
  • Direct mine activities to ensure safety and compliance with quality control standards, regulatory compliance and environmental agreements.
  • All tasks to be completed within the allocated timeframes and budget;
  • Participate in budget planning cycles;
  • Review and implement cost saving initiatives.


  • Progressive hands on mine operational experience with increasing levels of supervisory responsibilities to at least general foreman level; or Bachelor Degree Mine Engineering, or Geological Engineering with proven relevant operational experience and supervision.
  • 10-15 years of relevant and progressive underground mining experience is essential
  • 5 years in a senior management role
  • Experience managing a start-up mine would be considered an asset

Skills & Knowledge

  • Proven skills in budgeting, staff management, workforce optimization and cost control;
  • Must have experience in mining and cost reduction strategies;
  • Strong knowledge of WorkSafeNB legislation or equivalent;
  • Demonstrated ability to share skills and knowledge with others;
  • Demonstrated ability to multitask and work in a fast-paced office setting;
  • Proven ability to deal with process upsets, instability, and changing conditions;
  • Knowledge and personal credibility to influence co-workers;
  • Strong time management, organization, and prioritization skills;
  • Proactive and self-motivated;
  • Cultural sensitivity and ability to work within a diverse workplace;
  • Proven leadership skills with the ability to motivate;
  • Dynamic leader and mentor who is able to ensure team is focused on goals to meet/exceed expectations;
  • Underground skills and knowledge as it relates to rock bolting, scaling, development, blasting, drilling, production and backfill;
  • Adept problem solver;
  • Ability to read, analyse and interpret general and technical reports, processes and procedures, and government regulations;
  • Ability to write brief reports, business correspondence and operational standards;
  • Ability to see initiatives through to completion on budget and on time;
  • Strong computer skills using Microsoft Office tools;
  • Bilingualism considered an asset.
