EMPLOYEE RATE: $24.00 + 4% VACATION PAY

Must be willing and able to work flexible hours, and overtime on very short notice.

EDITOR - SENIOR

MANDATORY CRITERIA BELOW (ALL MUST BE MET 100% TO BE CONSIDERED). PLEASE PROVIDE 2 RECENT REFERENCES.

MANDATORY REQUIREMENTS:

M1. Education: Certificate, diploma, or degree, in a English, writing, journalism or other related field from a recognized post-secondary institution AND a minimum of five (5) years of relevant experience.

M2.  Recent* and significant** 5 years experience in writing and editing for the Web.

M3. Recent* and significant** 5 years experience in managing multiple writing assignments simultaneously, including managing timelines and revisions.

M4. Significant** 5 years experience in writing and editing content for a wide variety of audiences on health related topics.

M5. Experience assessing the readability level of written materials and recommending strategies and improvements to meet Government of Canada plain language requirements for Web.

M6. Recent* experience in writing and adapting content using plain language

M7. Recent* experience in working with style guides, including the Canada.ca Content Style Guide, The Canadian Style: A Guide to Writing and Editing / Le guide du rédacteur

M8. Experience incorporating feedback from colleagues and clients using track changes and comments

M9. Experience in providing client service and advice to managers and employees.

M10. Experience applying search engine optimization techniques to web content

*Recent is defined as within the last 1 year

**Significant is defined as a minimum of 5 years of experience

BACKGROUND

• Health Canada (HC) and Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) writes and publishes a very large volume of web content on a daily basis. Content varies from regulatory commitments to health and safety related content and advisories to help Canadians make decisions for their health.

• All HC and PHAC content are now on Canada.ca and need to be written in line with the Canada.ca Style Guide and the Canada.ca Content and Information Architecture Specifications, both under Government communications policy.

• The digital communications team is looking for additional resources to help write content in alignment with these Canada.ca requirements.

DUTIES

• Write and edit content for the Web. Content will range from introduction pages, articles, highlights, and summaries, to captions and text for interactive modules, etc. The content is aimed both the general audience (consumers) and health professional, including stakeholders .

• Work within a team environment where work is peer reviewed.

• Liaise with digital communications advisors to establish and/or clarify needs, assemble the necessary information, and review and/or approve content.

• Use plain language and content design principles to structure complex information to mirror online user behaviour and meet readability requirements.

• Edit content for general audiences to meet a score between Grade 6 and 8 on the Flesch Kincaid readability scale.

• Use best practices in Web writing to prepare documents for Canada.ca – including style, formatting, search engine optimization, keyword validation, usability/navigation principles, and government guidelines.

• Practice precise document management to ensure version control, quality and transparency.

• Coordinate translation.


• Prepare Web-appropriate adaptations of printed material, such as with language, style and format suitable for reading on a Web page. Prepare plain language summaries of complex documents or scientific reports intended principally for specialized audiences.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT

Work at Health Canada facilities located within Tunney's Pasture, Ottawa, Ontario.
