Job Description

Community Relations Consultant – International FIFO

Client – A Canadian mining company with multiple operations around the world.

Location – West Africa

Reports to – Corporate CSR Manager

Languages – Must be fluent in English/French

Rotation – 8 weeks on / 4 weeks off

Duties and Responsibilities
• Oversee CR department when CR Manager is on leave, and provide support when CR Manager is on site, including developing, directing, participating in and/or evaluating:               

  • Grievance management;
  • Plan and project for stakeholder engagement, community development, ASM, human rights management, and local procurement and employment;
  • The professional development of CR team members;
  • The implementation of the clients Social Performance Standards
  •  Monthly and quarterly reporting;

• Support the implementation of major projects; and
• Carry out the above functions in accordance to the clients Social Policy and Social Performance Standards.

A significant area of responsibility will be overseeing the resettlement of a local village:

• Accountable for executing a successful resettlement project and working with external experts and consultants, all levels of company management, and other employees to fulfill on this mandate, including:
                o Ensure the livelihoods and standards of living of displaced people are fully restored or enhanced, including through participation in the construction of the new village;

o Oversee ongoing and regular engagement with affected community members and other stakeholders in order to manage expectations and inform company of stakeholder perspectives;
o Work with CR team members and external consultants on livelihood restoration programs and ensure alignment with community development;
o Oversee grievance management related to land disputes, compensation and resettlement commitments;
o Generate reports as needed (weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual) to management on resettlement progress, impact metrics and budget;
o Coordinate with other site-level departments and the clients corporate head office;

Competencies and Requirements
• Degree in a relevant field (e.g. Social Development, Economics, Social Science, International Relations, Communication);
• Master’s degree will be an asset;
• 6– 10 years related professional experience in the mining industry, preferably in a management capacity;
• Experience in coordinating with internal departments and external stakeholders and partners;
• Understanding of community relations processes, international standards, and best practices;
• Ability to identify, understand, and manage community expectations and needs;
• Strong skills in team building, conflict management, and consensus building;
• Strong organizational and project management skills; and
• Fluent in English and French.
